On September 18th of each year Azerbaijanis all over the world commemorate the birthday anniversary of one of the greatest individuals in the nation’s history; composer, publicist and playwright Uzeyir Hajibeyov. Mr.Hajibeyov composed numerous operas and musical pieces including the anthem of Azerbaijani Democratic Republic of 1918, which is also the current anthem of Azerbaijani Republic. Moreover, his contributions for the world culture is undeniable, he was the creator of the first operas in the Islamic World and in the Orient.
Uzeyir Hajibeyov was born in 1885 in Agjabadi region of Azerbaijan which at the time was part of the Russian Empire. He was a great admirer of Khurshidbanu Natavan – a great Azerbaijani poetess and was strongly influenced by her work. Hajibeyov wrote his first opera in 1908; titled “Leyli and Majnun” it was based on a tragic love story written by 12th century Azerbaijani poet Nizami Ganjavi. His later operas include Rustam and Sohrab (1910), Asli and Karam (1912), Shah Abbas and Khurshid Banu (1912), and Harun and Leyli (1915). Hajibeyov’s operas thus were based on Azerbaijani folklore and history although the Western influence could also be seen in many of his musical pieces.
Hajibeyov’s another great legacy was the establishment of a professional music school - the Baku Academy of Music which was founded in 1920. Many of Azerbaijan’s admired and well-known composers including Gara Garayev, Fikrat Amirov, Tofig Guliyev and Vagif Mustafazade were trained at this school.
Throughout his life Hajibeyov received many titles and awards including the title of People’s Artist of USSR in 1938, Order of Lenin and the Stalin Prizes for his opera Koroghlu in 1941 and for the film Arshin Mal Alan based on one of his operas in 1946 of each year Azerbaijanis all over the world commemorate the birthday anniversary of one of the greatest individuals in the nation’s history; composer, publicist and playwright Uzeyir Hajibeyov.
