Azerbaijan’s Olympic team was represented by 53 athletes in 16 sports at the 30th Summer Olympic Games. The national team ranked 30th in the Olympic rating list, with two gold, two silver and six bronze medals, doubling the nation’s overall medal count at the Athens Games in 2004. More than half of these medals were awarded in wrestling, including gold medals won by Toghrul Asgarov and Sharif Sharifov from the men’s freestyle events. Ten medals gained at this year`s London Olympics show the progress being made in Azerbaijani sports. These impressive results for the Azerbaijani national team inspire great hopes for the next Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
